so, when i first heard about cocknbullkid, i wasn’t sure what to make of her, considering i’m horrible about shunning music due to band names (as documented in cringe-worthy glory HERE when i talked about big head todd and the monsters). but, then i read that 25 year old brit anita blay is a cross between santogold, morrissey and madonna, and i figured it couldn’t hurt to give a listen.
OMG PEEPS. I AM SO GLAD I DID.
(although i’m going to argue maybe more kylie minogue or annie than madonna?)
here’s what CNBK is: catchy. okay, here’s what else she is: seriously, insanely fun. she’s got a crystal-sweet voice and synth beats that take any gen-xer back to happier days (oh, wait until you hear the cure–like strains in the following song – SQUEE!). this is dancing music, friends. happy music. bounce your head, bounce your knee, pogo-stick it, turn it up, sing it cheerfully and without shame music.

song number two is kicking remix of hold onto your misery done by dan lissvik. it’s got clapping in it, so right there, you know i’m going to love it. it’s got kids singing, too, in a non-cheesy way (or is it really cheesy, but in the delightful i can’t resist way?). there are hints of abba. i kid you not. it’s like a pure shot of addictive pop fizz, which is wholly ironic, because CNBK claims it’s all “about stopping putting so much value on being happy. when i’m happy, things start to drop. sometimes you have to go back to that point when you’re 14 and you think everyone hates you.” whee!
