in which one october song stays with its listener

so, nico stai is a spanish born, LA based indie singer-songwriter whose songs have been featured on chuck (which, by the way, has a kickass music scout, because that show has also featured frightened rabbit and many other amazing bands that inspire musical love and not bleeding ears). he’s got a gritty sort of voice that i really dig because it sounds so bloody honest, rather than polished like so many artists out there on the radio today.

i want to share today a song by nico that i just adore. one october song is so quiet and simple, just nico’s raw vocals and a guitar and a little tambourine, and yet – it’s incredibly powerful. it’s the sort of song that sinks into your bones and stays a long time after the last note is played.

i like that it’s ambiguous. i honestly have no idea what nico meant it to be about, and i like that. because now it can mean something specific to me.

you know that thing
that you say you sometimes dream of
well i think it’s happening to me
you know they say
that time will take a hold of you
well
you kill the voice or it kills you

oh no
you shouldn’t really speak about it
oh no
you shouldn’t really speak about it

and you look thin
well the drugs will make you thinner still
the sort of thing you’d never see
look up and up and up and up above and up above now
and count your lucky stars

but oh no
you shouldn’t really speak about it
you shouldn’t really speak about it

you know that thing
that you say you sometimes dream of
well i think it’s happening to me
