so, there are some songs that are just so bitterly, gorgeously sad that you can’t help but want to pull them close and give them warm hugs. today’s song, remember when it snowed by rosie thomas, is just such a song.
built around a piano and thomas’ sweet voice, it’s a sad tale of–what else–what once was. it’s both a holiday song and a timeless one, the kind of song you can listen to in june and not feel ashamed of doing so. or on a rainy day in february. or whenever you like! well, except when you’re blindingly happy, because then it might bring you down. but, c’mon now. you love the sad songs, too. you know you do.
remember when it snowed?
never thought the rain would end
we built a sled
and felt like kids again
remember when it snowed?
all the evergreens turned bright
they stood so tall
like angels in the sky
remember when it snowed?
we stayed up most the night
your house was cold
so we wore our coats inside
remember when it snowed?
we all went caroling
’till our toes were numb
’till we ran out of songs to sing
for christmas, all i want is to come home
and be back around the places i know
all i hold are memories of then
and all i want is to be there
if you really can go home again
remember when it snowed?
remember our first christmas here?
you built the tallest snowman
right outside our bedroom window for me
remember when it snowed?
and i broke down and cried
you used your father’s mittens
and wiped the tears from my eyes
and for christmas, all i want is to come home
and be back around the faces that i know
all i hold are memories of then
and all i want is to be there
if you really can go home again
and for christmas, all i want is to be home
and be back around the faces that i know
all i hold are memories of then
and all i want is to be there
if you really can go home again
all i want is to be there
but you really can’t go home again
how i wish i was home
how i wish that rain would fall
right on my house
and we wouldn’t even really notice it all
